MASVINGO – A Form 3 student from Sizane High School in Bulawayo died on Thursday night after he drowned in a swimming pool at Flamboyant Hotel in Masvingo where the students who were on study trip were booked in for the night.
Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa told The Mirror that he had heard about the incident but was yet to get the full details.“I have heard about the incident but I am just getting into the office to get the full story. I am not yet aware of the name of the deceased, the school or how the whole incident happened,” said Dhewa.
A local reporter who got to the hotel after the incident was told that the student, together with two colleagues sneaked out of their hotel rooms at around 8pm and went to the pool to swim. A hotel manager saw them and chased them away but they returned as soon as the manager left.
The deceased is to have dived into the pool but he slipped and hit his head hard onto steps leading into the water and suffered a fatal cut in the head. He is said to have sunk to the bottom of the pool and his body was discovered minutes later after a search.
He was declared dead on arrival at Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
The deceased is one of the several swimmers to drown in the same pool over the years. Flamboyant Hotel is however, not the only one in the country to suffer that fate. There are many other hotels including the Great Zimbabwe Hotel, Ancient City and three to five star hotels in Harare, Bulawayo and Mutare that have seen guests losing life in their pools
